Homicide rates in Mexico dropped by 24.5% during the first nine months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency. During this period, authorities arrested over 25,255 individuals for serious crimes and seized more than 180 tons of drugs, according to preliminary government data released on Tuesday.

The daily average of murders fell to 65.6 in June, down from 86.9 in September 2024—the final month of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration (2018–2024). This represents 21 fewer homicides per day, explained Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).

Figueroa also highlighted that from June 2019, which recorded the highest average, to June 2025, homicides dropped by 34.5%. “As clearly shown in the chart, this is the lowest June since 2016,” she said during the government’s daily press briefing.

She added that seven of Mexico’s 32 states accounted for 54% of all homicides during these nine months: Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, State of Mexico, Michoacán, and Guerrero.

Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch detailed that more than 180.8 tons of drugs were confiscated, including 1,425 kilograms of fentanyl and over 3.62 million pills of this synthetic narcotic, along with nearly 13,275 firearms.

Sheinbaum acknowledged that extortion remains a persistent crime and announced plans to introduce legislation to combat it more effectively, aiming for automatic prosecution similar to that for homicide. “To establish a comprehensive law against extortion, the Constitution must be amended (…) Congress will be able to enact a general anti-extortion law following the constitutional reform we plan to undertake,” she stated.
